A small business guide to DISP

DISP's requirements are broad, and an SME has fewer people to carry them. We align the implementation with your size, maturity and experience in Defence, whatever your current level of compliance.

Key challenges

  1. A complex framework

SMEs often find DISP compliance complex and hard to navigate.

  2. Executive time

Senior staff who could implement DISP often have time and wages better spent on growth.

  3. Predictable cost

A small business needs to know the cost before it commits.

  4. Cyber requirements

SMEs can generally meet Entry Level cyber requirements with relative ease, once they know what is needed.

  1. Where most SMEs start

In our experience, Entry Level is most suited to SMEs with some exposure to Defence and government, or those newly entering the market. Companies deeply involved in Defence, such as those designing and manufacturing critical combat systems and components, are better suited to Level 1 and above.

  2. Supply chain opportunities

Government and Primes are seeking to strengthen the SME supply chain. SMEs need to lift their internal processes to keep information secure, particularly when Defence contracts involve sensitive and classified material. DISP was the government's answer, and it is now a requirement for many tenders.

  3. Fixed price, predictable timeline

We deliver Entry Level as a fixed-price, all-inclusive package, from the gap analysis to lodgement, with three months of support after approval. Weekly progress meetings with your Security Officer and stakeholders keep the project on track.

  4. How we help

We take on the implementation so your leadership can focus on what matters most to shareholders: growing the business.

Relevant services

All services
  • DISP gap analysis

Every engagement starts with a complete audit of your existing processes across the four DISP domains: governance, personnel, physical and cyber security.

  • DISP documentation development

We write the policies, processes and plans your organisation needs to meet Defence’s requirements for identifying, assessing and managing security risk.

  • Application lodgement

Incorrect lodgement costs companies time and contracts, and can lead to a rejected application. We prepare and lodge your application and handle Defence’s questions.

  • CSO and SO training

DISP obliges members to keep their Chief Security Officer and Security Officer trained. We train both roles and support them as obligations come up.

Company size

  • Large Enterprises

For large organisations with multiple sites and teams. Coordinate DISP across functions and build on the frameworks you already run.

  • Multinationals

For multinationals with Australian operations. Fit DISP alongside global policies, systems and reporting lines.

Industries

  • Engineering & Design

Engineering and design firms building military hardware and Defence technology. Most tenders in the field require DISP membership.

  • Manufacturing & Fabrication

Manufacturers and fabricators supplying Primes and Defence. Protect drawings, parts and premises, and meet the DISP level your contracts require.

  • Consultants & Contractors

Advisory, engineering, cyber, project management and logistics consultants. A mixed-level approach can give you clearance flexibility at a lower cost.

  • Aerospace & Space

Military aviation, R&D and satellite technology firms. Manufacturers in the sector typically need Entry Level at minimum.

  • Shipbuilding & Naval Engineering

Shipbuilders, naval architects and their suppliers. Meet Prime and Defence requirements across yards, workshops and design offices.

  • Building & Construction

Construction firms working on Defence projects. Level 1 personnel and governance for self-sponsorship is often a pivotal advantage.

  • Logistics & Supply Chain

Logistics and supply chain firms supporting Defence. Entry Level is often sufficient, depending on the clearances your staff need.

  • Maintenance & Support Services

Maintenance, repair and support providers working on Defence equipment and sites. Clear your people and keep your membership current.

  • MSPs & MSSPs

MSPs and MSSPs supporting Defence suppliers. Choose the right cyber standard, reach the required Essential Eight maturity and plan accreditation.

Roles

  • Directors & CEOs

What DISP asks of company leadership: the commercial case, the Chief Security Officer role and the right level for your business.

  • Compliance Officers

For chief compliance officers: the four DISP pillars, the documentation behind them and systems that keep compliance sustainable.

  • CTOs & IT Managers

For CTOs and IT managers: the cyber requirements at each DISP level, choosing a standard and planning accreditation without over-investing.

  • Business Development

For business development leaders: what DISP membership costs, what it opens up, and how clearance readiness can win work.

Questions

  1. Who is eligible for DISP membership?

[Draft] Your business must be incorporated in Australia, hold an ABN, have someone able to obtain a Defence security clearance, and be financially viable. We confirm your eligibility in the first consult.

  2. How much does it cost?

Entry Level is a fixed-price, all-inclusive package. Higher levels are priced after the initial consult. [Awaiting whether prices or ranges should be published.]

  3. Can we apply without a consultant?

Yes. Defence allows companies to apply without external advice. Many organisations choose not to, because lodging before requirements are properly in place can cost time and contracts and can lead to a rejected application.
